A Day in the Life Of... V's Barbershop Franchise |
A Day In The Life Of A V's Barbershop Franchise Owner:
A Day in the Life...by Jim Valenzuela, Founder of V's Barbershops and CEO of V's Barbershop Franchise, LLC
My days look a lot different now than they did when I opened the doors to my first V's Barbershop back in 1999. But I still remember them fondly. Opening and running a barbershop seemed like a crazy idea since I had no experience in the industry, but, years later, it has proved to be a smart one--both from a financial perspective and a personal one.
My day would typically start with a cup of coffee and a "good morning" to the barbers. We opened promptly at 8am and it was amazing how quickly the shop would start buzzing. Without fail, I devoted one hour of each day to accounting for the business, but the remainder of my day was spent mingling with the customers, ensuring their experience was exactly what I had envisioned, and brainstorming different ways to promote the barbershop.
You could argue that successfully owning a barbershop is largely dependent on the art of "shootin' the bull". Some dread it, others revel in it. I found it incredibly fulfilling to spend my days with patrons watching "the big game" on the TVs (there's always one at every station); talking to them about their families, what sports their kids were playing, which schools they were applying to. Owning a barbershop inherently means being part of the neighborhood, part of a community. I've never turned down a mom asking for a donation to support the little league team, or a request for a gift certificate for local charity or school fundraising. On more than one occasion, I gave my customers' sons their first job at the age of 13 as the shoeshine boy on Saturday. These kids are now attending Stanford, The Naval Academy and USC; but, years later, they still come back to the barbershop to personally thank me, as do their fathers.
While I still enjoy spending a part of my day in the barbershops, my biggest responsibility now as a franchisor is discovering ways to make owning a V's Barbershop an even better experience for V's franchisees. The V's corporate team has taken a lot of the effort out of many aspects of owning the business. We've developed a complete set of training tools, streamlined the process for ordering supplies, lowered the cost of marketing and advertising and made it possible to manage the shop remotely by installing POS and reporting systems along with surveillance cameras that can be accessed and viewed via the web from anywhere in the world. I'm extremely proud that V's still has that great, old-time barbershop feel but equally thrilled to offer individuals an opportunity to own something of their own - complete with the technology, support and backing of modern day big business.
Jim is currently the CEO of V's Barbershop Franchise, LLC. He recently partnered with Kahala Corp, a franchisor of such brands as Cold Stone Creamery, Blimpie and many others, to provide additional expertise and support to V's franchisees. He still personally owns the first two V's Barbershops ever opened. |
